Year 1
Welcome to Year 1.
First Day Information
The first day is a "settling in day" when Year 1 daily routines and expectations are explained to the children. Here we discuss and reinforce the Golden Rules. Each child is allocated a desk and class equipment is distributed. The morning is spent on Reading, English and Maths activities. The afternoon is a time for creative opportunities usually linked to the theme of Colour, which is the first topic of the term. The day ends with a relaxing story.
Daily Routine
The children begin the day with reading a book from the school reading scheme. Children are heard read three times a week by the experienced staff. They are taught Mathematics and English (in conjunction with the Ruth Miskin Read, Write Inc phonics scheme) in the mornings. These are structured lessons where the children are expected to work quietly and independently. The afternoon lessons focus on the other subjects: Science, History, Geography, Art, Design and Technology, Information Technology and Music. Religious Education is taught from a Christian perspective in the Infant Department. We cover stories from the Old Testament such as Samuel, Saul, Christmas story, Jesus' Miracles, Easter story and Moses. Personal Social and Health Education (P.S.H.E) is taught each week giving children opportunities to discuss topical issues such as friendships, behaviour and health. The children also have dance lessons twice a week with a specialist teacher.
Homework is set as follows:
Autumn Term:
One piece of Maths and English (occasionally Science) set on Friday to be returned on the following Monday.
Spring Term:
