Music

Music is taught weekly by a specialist music teacher. All year groups learn songs to sing and play on the recorder. These are performed to parents regularly.

Year 3

In Year three children study the Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint Saens. This involves listening to 14 excerpts of music, each portraying a particular animal. The focus is on the Lion, the Aquarium and the Swan. Students begin to identify the instruments that are used and the reasons for the choice of instrument.

Year 4

In Year 4 children continue to work on Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint Saens. For this, students listen to 14 excerpts of music and recognise which animal each excerpt represented. Subsequently, students then begin to differentiate between the excerpts, and look at the relationships that the instruments had with the animals.

Year 5

Throughout year five children work on vocal development, focusing on two part harmonies, in particular the 'Round'. The students becoe confident in ging the popular song, 'Kookaburra'. After understanding the structure of the Round, the class are divided into two and eventually four parts, resulting in a full, four part round.

Year 6

In year Six children concentrate on vocal development, singing a number of songs using chant and syncopated rhythms, most notably the song, 'Ocean Commotion'. This demonstrates a number of musical disciplines and explores the full vocal range. Students understand the need to sustain notes and use dynamics throughout.
